About
Stromanthe sanguinea 'Triostar' (also sold as 'Tricolor') is a popular ornamental cultivar of a perennial in the family Marantaceae native to the Brazilian rainforest. Its variegated leaves blend green, cream-white and pink for a strikingly colourful effect, with undersides flushed a vivid magenta-pink. A relative of Calathea and Maranta, it shows nyctinasty, folding its leaves upright at night. It prefers bright indirect light; direct sun fades the colour and scorches the leaves. Maintaining high humidity is key to healthy foliage, as dry air browns the leaf tips. Water when the soil surface dries, avoiding both waterlogging and drought. Sensitive to water quality, it does best with dechlorinated water or rainwater. Cold-sensitive and humidity-demanding, it is somewhat better suited to experienced growers.
