Cattleya Maxima
IntermediateCattleya maxima
A large Cattleya from Ecuador-Peru with lavender blooms and beautifully frilled lips.
About
Cattleya maxima, the Large Cattleya, is an epiphytic orchid native to Pacific coastal mountain forests in Ecuador and Peru. Plants grow 30–60 cm with single-leafed pseudobulbs and produce five to fifteen flowers per stem, each 10–14 cm across. The flowers display pale lavender to white petals and a deeply fringed lip in vivid lavender to purple with radiating purple veins—among the most ornate lips in the genus. A sweet fragrance accompanies blooms from autumn to winter (October–February). Cultivation requires bright indirect light, temperatures of 12–28°C, a free-draining bark or pumice medium, and a dry rest in summer–autumn to encourage flowering.
