About

Phragmipedium is a genus of slipper orchids native to tropical and subtropical regions from Mexico to South America (Peru, Bolivia, Brazil). Like Paphiopedilum, they have a distinctive pouch-shaped lip, but are of New World origin. Plants grow 20–50 cm with narrow, strap-like leathery leaves. The flowers feature conspicuously elongated lateral petals that hang downward; overall flower dimensions (including petals) range from 5 to 40 cm in some species. Colors include green, red, orange, pink, and white, with flowers opening successively on the stem. Plants prefer constantly moist conditions (tray watering is acceptable), temperatures of 15–28°C, and bright indirect light. Phragmipedium besseae, with vivid orange-red flowers, is among the most globally sought-after species.
