About
Cryptocoryne beckettii is an aroid from central and south-western Sri Lanka, closely related to the island's C. wendtii, C. undulata and C. walkeri, and it has been used in aquaria for more than 60 years. It has pointed green leaves with brown tones. The widely sold 'Petchii' (synonym C. petchii) is a small form with 10–15 cm leaves, slightly wavy margins, dark olive-brown upper surfaces and violet undersides. Leaf colour and shape depend heavily on conditions, so it can be confused with the related C. wendtii. It adapts to soft and hard water and is not fussy about light, though brighter light helps. After planting, the rosettes spread and daughter plants from the rhizome fill in a dense clump; growth is a little faster in rich substrate. It can also be grown emersed in moist, rich soil, where it may flower. It is a staple beginner's Crypt in Japanese specialist shops.
