About
Diospyros kaki, the Oriental persimmon or Japanese persimmon (Kaki), is a deciduous tree native to China and widely cultivated throughout East Asia for millennia. In bonsai, the species is prized as an outstanding fruiting specimen: the deeply furrowed, checked bark of aged specimens conveys remarkable character, while the autumn display of large orange-to-crimson fruits persisting on bare branches after leaf fall is spectacular. The Chinese species Diospyros rhombifolia, known as 'Roya-gaki' in Japanese bonsai, produces abundant small, pearl-like fruits and is especially popular among bonsai collectors. Autumn leaf color ranges from yellow to deep red.
