Nepenthes Rebecca Soper
IntermediateNepenthes 'Rebecca Soper'
A highland hybrid pitcher plant whose slender, waisted pitchers deepen from burgundy to nearly black outside, contrasting with the pale interior. Widely sold in hanging baskets; sources give its parentage as N. ventricosa crossed with N. ramispina or a related species.
About
Nepenthes 'Rebecca Soper' is a highland hybrid pitcher plant. It is described as bred by Matthew Soper of Hampshire Carnivorous Plants in the UK and named after his eldest daughter. Sources disagree on its parentage: some give N. ramispina × N. ventricosa, others N. ventricosa × N. gracillima. The name does not appear in the International Carnivorous Plant Society (ICPS) register. The pitchers are slender and narrow in the middle; outside they deepen from burgundy and purple to almost black with age, contrasting with the pale interior, and the leaves are also tinged burgundy to purple. In Japan it is a staple sold in hanging baskets and often searched for by name. Its offspring 'Linda', reported as 'Rebecca Soper' × red N. ventricosa, looks similar, so labels matter. As a highland hybrid it is said to colour best with cool conditions and a day-night temperature swing.

Growing Tips
Light & Placement
Needs plenty of light but not harsh midsummer sun, which scorches and dries it; low light gives paler colour.
Temperature & Overwintering
Ideal about 15-25°C. A highland hybrid that likes cooler nights; avoid below 10°C and above 30°C.
Watering
Use rain water or water low in dissolved minerals and water before the mix dries out. Do not leave the pot standing in water; a free-draining mix keeps the roots healthy.
Soil & Repotting
Plant in a free-draining, airy mix; pure sphagnum or orchid mix with sphagnum or perlite are common choices.
Fertilizer
If using chemical fertilizer, use it at very low strength; an occasional insect dropped into a pitcher is enough.
Propagation
Cuttings root in damp sphagnum inside a bag or case in one to two months and start producing pitchers after about six months. Propagate by cuttings to keep the cultivar true.
