About

Nepenthes 'Gaya' is a hybrid pitcher plant with N. khasiana as one parent and a N. ventricosa × N. maxima hybrid as the other. The English Wikipedia article on the genus lists it among well-known man-made hybrids as N. khasiana × (N. ventricosa × N. maxima). Overseas retailers sell the same cross as 'St. Gaya', describing a vigorous plant with fairly large, upright pitchers splashed with bright red on a yellow-green ground. No source confirms whether the 'Gaya' sold in Japan is the same plant as 'St. Gaya'. The name is not in the International Carnivorous Plant Society (ICPS) register, and its breeder and date are unknown. The parents N. khasiana and N. ventricosa are both known as easy highland species. In Japan it is sold widely, online, in mass-market hanging baskets and even by aquarium plant shops, and variegated plants are also offered. It is robust and grows well with a bright room, a free-draining mix and low-mineral water.

Watering & Fertilizer

Growing Tips

Light & Placement

Grow at a bright window; a little direct sun brings out the red spotting.

Watering

Use rain water or water low in dissolved minerals and water before the mix dries out. Do not leave the pot standing in water; a free-draining mix keeps the roots healthy.

Temperature & Overwintering

Its parents N. khasiana and N. ventricosa are highland species that like cooler nights; bring it into a warm room for winter.

Soil & Repotting

Plant in a free-draining, airy mix; pure sphagnum or orchid mix with sphagnum or perlite are common choices.

Fertilizer

If using chemical fertilizer, use it at very low strength; an occasional insect dropped into a pitcher is enough.

Pests & Cautions

Plants sold as variegated can scorch more easily; acclimatise them and avoid harsh direct sun.
