Sinningia (known in Japan as the Queen of the Cliffs) is a caudex plant of the genus Sinningia in the family Gesneriaceae, native to South America and especially Brazil. The Japanese name derives from Sinningia leucotricha, which grows as a lithophyte on precipitous cliffs and is prized for the rounded, woody tuber it exposes above the soil. The tuber stores water as an adaptation to seasonal drought. The plant is highly ornamental, contrasting silvery-hairy leaves with tubular flowers in scarlet to orange tones. It is deciduous, dropping its top growth and going dormant during the cold of winter, then regrowing from the crown of the tuber in spring. Grow it in bright partial shade to full sun in a free-draining mix. Because water on the leaves or growing point can cause rot, water the soil around the base rather than the plant itself; water when the mix dries during growth and reduce watering during dormancy. It is relatively hardy and easy to grow, and its unusual tuber and flowers make it a popular choice.
