About
'Dragon Scale' is a cultivar of Alocasia baginda, a species described in 2011 from plants originating in East Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo. According to the original description the species is a small terrestrial herb 25-30 cm tall, with almost fully peltate, stiff, thickly leathery blades 10-18 cm long and 7-12 cm wide. The upper surface is matte dark green with contrasting pale grey raised (bullate) panels defined by the primary and marginal veins; the underside is pale green with the veins deep red towards the tip. The similar A. melo differs in its finely wrinkled leaf surface, and A. reginula in its black-green leaves with white veins and wholly red undersides. Its wild habitat is unknown; the authors suggested limestone or ultramafic outcrops based on related species. No source was found documenting who selected 'Dragon Scale' or how. Related names from the same species, such as 'Silver Dragon', are also sold, so check the label and leaf colour when buying. It is available in Japan from houseplant shops and online retailers.
