About

Chlorophytum comosum, the spider plant, is a perennial in the family Asparagaceae, native to tropical and southern Africa. One of the most widely grown houseplants in the world, it forms rosettes of long, arching, strap-like leaves with a central white or yellow stripe, and produces long stolons (runners) tipped with miniature plantlets that dangle from the parent plant — a growth habit that gives rise to the 'spider plant' common name. In Japan, the plantlets resemble origami cranes, hence the Japanese name オリヅルラン ('folded crane plant'). Exceptionally hardy and adaptable, it tolerates low light, irregular watering, and cool temperatures. Bright indirect light produces the most vivid variegation. Recognised in NASA's Clean Air Study as an effective remover of indoor pollutants. Plantlets can be propagated by rooting them in water or soil. Elegant and charming when displayed in hanging baskets.
