About

Ficus elastica, commonly known as the rubber plant or rubber fig, is an evergreen tree in the family Moraceae, native to the tropical rainforests of northeastern India through to the Malay Peninsula. It is cultivated worldwide as an ornamental plant for its large, glossy, oval leaves that lend bold, architectural presence to interiors. New leaves emerge tightly coiled in reddish protective sheaths. Growth indoors is moderate, typically reaching 1–2 m. It prefers bright indirect light but tolerates shade; direct sun can cause leaf scorch. Watering should be moderate — allow the top layer of soil to dry before watering again, and reduce frequency in winter. Leaves benefit from occasional wiping to remove dust and enhance photosynthesis. The milky latex sap is a skin irritant and should be handled with care. Popular cultivars include Burgundy, Tineke, and Ruby.
