Dracaena and Cordyline are two popular groups of foliage plants. Dracaena (genus Dracaena, family Asparagaceae) includes many species with long, sword- or strap-shaped leaves arranged in a rosette, such as Dracaena fragrans, the 'happiness tree'. Cordyline, in the same family, includes many cultivars with colourful red, purple and pink foliage that lend a tropical feel. The two look alike and are often confused, but they are separate genera - Dracaena typically has yellow-orange roots, Cordyline whiter ones. Both adapt readily to indoor conditions and are tough and easy to grow. They prefer bright indirect light, with strong direct sun causing leaf scorch. Water once the soil surface dries, taking care to avoid root rot from overwatering. They grow tall and suit interiors that make use of vertical space.
