Pachira / Schefflera
BeginnerPachira aquatica / Schefflera spp.
Popular indoor foliage—Pachira with braided trunks and upright growth, Schefflera with radiant umbrella-like leaves. Both adapt well to indoor conditions and tolerate variable light. Minimal care requirements for beginners.
About
Pachira and Schefflera are two tough, easy and very popular foliage plants. Pachira aquatica, the money tree, is a tree in the family Malvaceae native to Central and South America, characterised by its glossy, palmate leaves and braided trunks. Often called the 'money tree', it is a classic gift for shop openings and a symbolic interior plant. Schefflera (the umbrella plant or 'kapok'), in the family Araliaceae, has handsome palmate leaves of leaflets radiating like fingers and is likewise very hardy and beginner-friendly. Both are shade-tolerant and adapt well indoors, but grow more healthily in bright indirect light; direct sun scorches the leaves. Water once the soil surface dries, avoiding root rot from overwatering. Fairly drought-tolerant and low-maintenance, they are popular choices for a first houseplant.
