About

Paphiopedilum insigne, the type species of the genus, is native to forest floors and rocky slopes at 1,000–1,800 m in northeastern India (Assam, Meghalaya). Plants grow 20–35 cm with plain green leaves. Each stem bears one to three flowers, 7–10 cm across, with a yellowish-green dorsal sepal spotted with brown and glossy yellow-green petals and pouch. Flowering occurs from autumn to winter (October–February). This species is notably easy to cultivate and relatively cold-tolerant (to about 5°C), making it an excellent introduction to Paphiopedilum. Bright indirect light, moderate humidity, and a sphagnum or bark medium are recommended.
