The species name 'filifera' means 'thread-bearing.' Mature rosettes typically reach 40–60 cm in diameter. Growth is slow, and flowering takes 10–20 years. It performs best in full sun but tolerates bright partial shade. Watering should be conservative; the plant is susceptible to root rot, so a well-draining soil mix is essential. Reduce watering to about once a month during winter. The decorative fibers and relatively compact size make it a popular choice in collections. It offsets readily, making propagation straightforward. Together with Agave geminiflora and A. leopoldii, it forms an informal group known as the 'thread agaves' among Japanese enthusiasts.
