Agave potatorum 'Super Crown'

'Super Crown' is an edged cultivar derived from the Japanese agave Kissho Kan. According to a specialist-written Japanese succulent encyclopedia, it arose at Soda Nursery in Aichi Prefecture as a sport of the white-edged form of Kissho Kan. Rosettes reach 30-50 cm across with cream variegation, and the leaves are glossier and the variegation more vivid than in the parent. On the other hand, the leaves are softer and the skin thinner, so it tends to be one step less tolerant of midsummer sun and winter cold than the older Kissho Kan Nishiki. A Japanese succulent encyclopedia describes a deep-yellow-edged Kissho Kan Nishiki as looking 'like Super Crown', so it can be hard to tell from strongly edged Kissho Kan Nishiki. Sellers often list it as 'Kissho Kan Nishiki Super Crown', so check the leaf gloss, the brightness of the variegation and the width of the edge on the actual plant. Its parent is Kissho Kan, whose edged form is Kissho Kan Nishiki. In Japan it is sold by specialist nurseries, garden centres and online shops.
