About
'Red Catweazle' is a garden cultivar propagated from the most strongly red-tinged titanota plants; in Japan it is also called Akaneko or Beniko ('red cat'). According to a specialist-written Japanese succulent encyclopedia, given plenty of sun the whole plant turns redder than ordinary titanota, making the rugged teeth stand out even more; in weak light it reverts to green, so grow it hard in full sun. Micropropagation has made it increasingly common. A Japanese succulent encyclopedia says it began circulating in Japan around 2018 and that its teeth tend to be wavier and bolder than typical titanota. Plants seem to vary in leaf density, colour and tooth size, but this is mostly down to age and growing conditions. Derived types are also sold as 'Gorineko' and 'Jigokuneko'. The encyclopedia rates it easy for beginners, and it is widely offered by garden centres and online shops in Japan.
