Drosera madagascariensis
BeginnerDrosera madagascariensis
A stem-forming sundew that raises a distinct stem with alternate, spoon-shaped sticky leaves. The lower stem is clothed in dead old leaves and the plant reaches about 25 cm. A robust African species with pink flowers.
About
Drosera madagascariensis is a perennial sundew described by de Candolle in 1824. It ranges widely through tropical Africa (Guinea, Nigeria, Cameroon, Congo, Angola and elsewhere) south to South Africa and east to Madagascar, growing in swamps, along streams and in sphagnum bogs. Unlike rosette-forming sundews it grows a distinct stem; young plants stand upright, while older ones topple and creep or use their leaves to anchor themselves to surrounding plants. It reaches about 25 cm, with carnivorous leaves at the top and dead old leaves hanging along the lower stem. The alternate leaves have petioles 1.5-3 cm long and spoon-shaped blades 10-15 mm long and about 7 mm wide. The roots are weak and mainly anchor the plant and take up water. Flower stalks 20-40 cm tall carry about 4-12 pink flowers. In Madagascar wild plants are harvested in large numbers as a medicinal raw material, raising concern about local decline. In Japan it is sold by specialist nurseries, wildflower shops and online auctions. In cultivation it behaves as an easy subtropical sundew without dormancy, and leggy plants can be renewed from cuttings.

Watering
Keep the soil constantly moist on a water tray, using pure or rain water. Prefers somewhat higher humidity than a typical room.
Temperature & Overwintering
Subtropical sundews grow at roughly 10-35°C and need no dormancy. In winter keep it above 10°C.
Soil & Repotting
Plant in pure sphagnum or a peat-sand mix; for stem-forming species a layer of live sphagnum over peat mix works well. Avoid any soil with added fertilizer.
Propagation
When the stem gets leggy, renew it from stem, root or leaf cuttings; stem cuttings give large plants quickly.
Fertilizer
No fertilizer in the soil. If feeding, place a little small insect or rehydrated dried bloodworm on a dewy leaf.
