About

Heliamphora nutans is the type species of the genus Heliamphora (sun pitchers), native to the summits of the tepuis (table-top mountains) of the Guiana Highlands, particularly Roraima and adjacent tepuis on the Venezuela-Brazil border, at elevations of 2,000–2,700 m. It was the first Heliamphora described to science and is considered a representative example of the genus. The pitchers are elegantly simple—a pure tube topped by a small spoon-shaped nectar spoon that attracts insects—and digestion relies mainly on bacteria within the pitcher fluid rather than plant-derived enzymes. Its habitat is perpetually cool, misty, and exposed. Cultivation demands highland conditions: daytime temperatures of 18–25°C, night temperatures of 8–15°C, high humidity (70–90%), sphagnum media with excellent aeration, and pure or rainwater.
