Heliamphora purpurascens
AdvancedHeliamphora purpurascens
A sun pitcher species known only from the summit area of Ptari Tepui in Venezuela, at 2,400-2,500 m. Described only recently, it still has few detailed descriptions.
About
Heliamphora purpurascens is a sun pitcher known only from the summit area of Ptari Tepui in the Guiana Highlands of Venezuela, at 2,400-2,500 m. Heliamphora belongs to the pitcher plant family Sarraceniaceae and traps insects in tubular leaves that hold rainwater. This species was described by Wistuba, Fleischmann, Nerz and McPherson and featured in the Italian Carnivorous Plant Association's round-up of new species of 2011; Fleischmann and McPherson had published ecological notes on the Heliamphora of Ptari Tepui in 2010. The name is Latin for 'becoming purple', but detailed accounts of plant size and colouring are scarce. For growing Heliamphora, the International Carnivorous Plant Society (ICPS) advises beginners to start with hybrids and common species such as H. heterodoxa, H. nutans and H. minor, so this single-mountain species is best left to experienced growers. In Japan it is sold as a species by specialist nurseries and at online auctions.

Growing Tips
Temperature & Overwintering
Heliamphora tolerate about 30°C, but large plants can die if held above 26°C for long. This summit species should be kept cool in summer, for example with air conditioning.
Light & Placement
Needs very bright light: indoors, LEDs for about 15 hours a day, with light reaching the pitchers from the sides too.
Watering
Use pure water such as RO; keep a few millimetres in the tray or water from above daily, depending on the mix. Unless room humidity stays above 70%, grow it in an enclosure such as a terrarium.
Pests & Cautions
Sustained heat and humidity can bring sudden death from a vascular fungus; do not reuse soil, and take care that overhead watering does not spread it.
Fertilizer
Growers who water from above every day add a very little fertilizer to the water or use slow-release fertilizer in the mix; with drip watering, light foliar feeding is enough.
