About
Nepenthes sibuyanensis is a pitcher plant species endemic to, and named after, Sibuyan Island in the Philippines. It was found by an expedition in 1996 and described by J. Nerz in 1998. It grows on Mount Guiting-Guiting, neighbouring Mount Mayo and the ridge between them at roughly 1,250-1,800 m, on open slopes of tall grasses and ferns, where the pitchers usually develop embedded in the ground and rarely see direct sun. The stem is a weak climber to about 1.5 m. Lower pitchers are ovate to funnel-shaped, up to 26 cm tall and 15 cm wide, yellowish to red with scattered red blotches below the rim. The peristome is up to 20 mm wide and usually dark red to almost black, and the lid is yellowish to orange. Upper pitchers are very rarely produced. The whole inner surface is glandular, with no waxy zone. Its seeds lack wings, thought to stop them blowing away from its windswept habitat. It belongs to the Insignes group with N. ventricosa and N. burkei, and is told apart by its ovate pitchers without a waist. Because of its tiny range it is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. In Japan seed-grown plants are regularly available from specialist nurseries.
