About

Gerrardanthus macrorhizus grows in forest margins and dry woodland from Kenya and Tanzania to eastern South Africa, belonging to the Cucurbitaceae family. As its name suggests (macrorhizus = large-rooted), it develops a large, spherical to oblate caudex in a distinctive green color—indicating the presence of chlorophyll enabling photosynthesis. Vigorous twining stems with divided, cucurbit-type leaves are produced during growth. Growth rate is relatively fast. Full sun to bright partial shade with well-draining soil is appropriate. Generous watering from spring through autumn and complete winter drought are standard. Somewhat frost-sensitive. The impressive presence of the large green spherical caudex combined with vigorous growth makes it one of the most popular cucurbit caudex plants in cultivation.
