Calibanus Hookeri
IntermediateCalibanus hookeri
A Mexican spherical caudex with cork-like large tuber producing fine grass-like leaves.
About
Calibanus hookeri grows on rocky, arid terrain in Querétaro and San Luis Potosí states in Mexico, belonging to the Asparagaceae family. Its most distinctive feature is the large, spherical caudex covered in thick, cork-like dark brown to blackish bark—a texture unlike most other caudex plants. Fine, grass-like leaves emerge from the top of the caudex in a dense tuft, forming a dome-shaped grassy crown. Growth is very slow and large specimens represent decades of development. Full sun and extremely porous soil are required. Restrained watering during the growing season with complete winter drought is correct. Cold tolerance is relatively good. While related to Beaucarnea, its smaller stature, unique corky caudex, and greater rarity place it firmly in the realm of specialty collectors.
