About
Ficus palmeri is a subspecies of Ficus petiolaris in the fig genus (Moraceae), correctly named Ficus petiolaris subsp. palmeri. It was described in the 19th century by the American botanist Sereno Watson as a separate species, Ficus palmeri, and later reduced by Felger to a subspecies of F. petiolaris. Most specimen and observation records gathered by GBIF come from Baja California Sur, Baja California and Sonora in Mexico, the dry north-western part of the species' range. On the Baja California peninsula, F. petiolaris is reported from the Sierra de la Asamblea south to the Cape region and on islands in the Gulf of California. It is also grown in botanical gardens such as those in Copenhagen and Stockholm. Published information on how to tell it apart from the typical subspecies is scarce, so buyers must rely on the name given at sale. In Japan plants with swollen, caudex-like bases are sold online and by specialist nurseries as "Ficus palmeri". Care follows that of the parent species: moderate water and bright partial shade.
