About
Monadenium is a group of succulent, caudex-forming plants of about 50 species distributed across the arid to semi-arid regions of eastern Africa, especially Kenya and Tanzania. Modern classifications place it within the genus Euphorbia (family Euphorbiaceae), but collectors continue to use the traditional name Monadenium for its distinctive characteristics. The plants are notable for their thick, fleshy stems with tubercle-like protrusions and a caudex developed underground or at the base; many species stay compact, making them suitable for indoor culture and mixed plantings. During the growing season they produce small flowers enclosed in unusual bracts. They prefer a sunny position but also grow in bright partial shade, as strong direct sun can scorch them. Use a very free-draining mix amended with pumice or sand. Water only after the mix has dried completely during growth, and keep them on the dry side during winter dormancy to avoid root rot. They are drought-tolerant but sensitive to excess moisture, so clearly distinguishing growth and dormancy is important. As with other euphorbias, the sap is irritating and should be handled with care.
