Pachypodium Baronii
AdvancedPachypodium baronii
A rare Pachypodium with red flowers, the only red-flowered species in the genus.
About
Pachypodium baronii is restricted to a limited range in northern Madagascar and holds the unique distinction of being the only red-flowered species in its genus. The vivid red blooms are its defining attraction. The trunk is cylindrical to slightly swollen, less dramatically inflated than species like P. gracilius, but adorned with long, sharp spines that give it a wild character. Leaves are glossy and narrowly elliptical. Due to its restricted natural range, wild populations are rare, and the species is listed under CITES Appendix II. Growth is slow and demands intense sunlight. Care follows the standard Pachypodium regime of highly porous soil, moderate watering during growth, and complete drought in winter. It adapts well to hot Japanese summers but must be protected from excessive humidity. Its singular red flowers and rarity command premium prices in the collector market.
