Caudiciform Pelargonium refers collectively to the species of the genus Pelargonium (family Geraniaceae), centered in South Africa, that develop a swollen, tuberous rootstock or stem forming a caudex. Many are winter-growing species that leaf out and flower from autumn to spring and go dormant, dropping their leaves, during the hot, dry summer, an adaptation to their Mediterranean-type arid native climate. They strongly dislike excess moisture and stagnant air. Grow them in a sunny, well-ventilated spot in a very free-draining mix rich in pumice and similar aggregates. Water when the mix dries during the cool growing season, and keep them nearly dry in summer dormancy to prevent rot. Cold tolerance varies by species, but as they are sensitive to freezing, it is safest to overwinter them in a bright place that stays above 0°C. Their succulent caudex and sculptural form make them favorites among caudex enthusiasts.
