About

Ficus lyrata, the fiddle-leaf fig, is an evergreen tree in the family Moraceae, native to the tropical rainforests of western Africa. Its large, leathery, deeply veined leaves with a wavy, fiddle-like outline give it one of the most distinctive silhouettes of any houseplant. It has become one of the most photographed and coveted interior plants in the world of design, regularly featured in architecture and lifestyle media. It prefers bright indirect light and is sensitive to direct sun. Water thoroughly after the soil dries, but avoid waterlogging. The fiddle-leaf fig is notably sensitive to environmental changes — moving the plant, sudden temperature shifts, or draughts from air conditioning can trigger leaf drop. Consistent conditions and careful watering are key to long-term success. Indoors it can reach 1.5–3 m, making it a commanding focal point in any space. It has received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
