About

Tillandsia ionantha, the blushing bride or sky plant, is an epiphyte in the bromeliad family (Bromeliaceae) native to Mexico and Central America and the best-known of the soil-free air plants. A small rosette species of densely packed slender leaves, it stands only about 5-10 cm and is easy to display, hardy and very popular with beginners. Usually silvery-green, it dramatically blushes vivid red or pink from the inner leaves toward the tips as flowering nears, then produces tubular purple flowers. Needing no soil, it absorbs water and nutrients through trichomes on its leaves. It prefers bright indirect light and avoids direct sun and stagnant heat. Water by misting several times a week or by occasional soaking for a few hours, then dry it well to prevent rot. Good air circulation is the key to keeping it healthy.
