About
Takane-ebine is a group of Calanthe thought to be natural hybrids between C. discolor and C. striata. It is not a single cultivar but a name for plants of many forms intermediate between the parents. Japan's C. discolor, C. striata, C. aristulifera and related species cross freely and their hybrids set seed, so where they grow together pure plants can be harder to find than hybrids. Takane plants generally resemble C. discolor, often with a yellow lip, but sepal and petal colours range from reddish brown to yellow and individual plants differ greatly. There are many similar names: crosses involving C. aristulifera are called Satsuma, and C. striata x C. aristulifera is called Higo; plants of uncertain parentage are loosely called the Takane type. Plants are therefore sometimes sold with flower colour unspecified; if you want a particular flower, check a plant in bloom or a photo of its flowers. Care is the same as for spring-flowering Calanthe: partial shade away from strong summer sun and heat. It is sold by wildflower nurseries in Japan.
