About

Dendrobium speciosum, the Rock Lily, is the largest native Australian orchid, found on rocky outcrops and trees from Queensland to Victoria. Robust pseudobulbs grow 30–80 cm with thick, leathery leaves. In spring (July–September in the Southern Hemisphere), long inflorescences (30–60 cm) bearing fifty to over two hundred small white to cream fragrant flowers create a spectacular display. The species is notably hardy, tolerating temperatures near 5°C and moderate drought. Strong light with some direct sun, a free-draining bark, gravel, or pumice medium, regular watering and feeding during growth, and a dry winter rest to promote flowering are the key cultivation requirements. Larger, established plants produce the most impressive blooms.
