Four-shield Phalaenopsis

Phalaenopsis tetraspis is an epiphytic moth orchid described in 1870; it was first published in error as a Himalayan plant and later corrected. It grows on the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and in north-western Sumatra, on trees in very shady forests and in mangroves over brackish water from sea level to 400 m. The obovate leaves are about 20 cm long and 8 cm wide, usually four or five (up to nine). In summer an arching stem 30-40 cm long bears four to eight glossy, fleshy, strongly fragrant flowers 4-6 cm across; the tip of the lip's middle lobe is densely hairy. Plants with red in the flowers were once separated as P. speciosa, but colour varies continuously from white to red and can even change from season to season on one plant, so P. speciosa was reduced to a synonym. Plants are still often sold as P. speciosa. As of February 2022 the Royal Horticultural Society register listed 187 hybrids involving it, including those registered under P. speciosa. Because the colour pattern differs between plants, selected plants are traded among hobbyists. In Japan it is sold by specialist orchid nurseries that carry Phalaenopsis species.
