The species behind the classic image of the large white moth orchid. A long, arching stem carries many flat white flowers about 6-8 cm across, and the lip ends in two thread-like tendrils. It is one of the national flowers of Indonesia.
About
Phalaenopsis amabilis is an epiphytic moth orchid. Linnaeus described it in 1753 as Epidendrum amabile and Blume gave it its current name in 1825; the epithet means 'lovely'. It ranges widely from the Philippines (Palawan), Borneo, Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi and the Moluccas to New Guinea and north-eastern Australia, and three subspecies are recognised. It has two to eight thick, fleshy leaves 15-30 cm long. An arching stem 30-75 cm long carries two to ten long-lasting white flowers on each branch near the tip. The flowers are about 6-8 cm across; the white lip is marked yellow and red, and its middle lobe ends in two thread-like tendrils. In Indonesia it is called anggrek bulan (moon orchid) and is one of the national flowers. It closely resembles P. aphrodite, the species that carries the Japanese name kochoran; P. amabilis has slightly larger flowers and differs in the shape of the callus at the base of the lip. Together these two species shaped the image of the large white moth orchid. It prefers more light than typical Phalaenopsis. In Japan it is sold by specialist orchid nurseries that carry Phalaenopsis species.
