A small terrestrial Paphiopedilum native to northern Sumatra, with sweetly scented pale yellow flowers that open one at a time in succession for a long season. Intermediate difficulty; flowers about 4 cm across.

开始养护原始兜兰前需要了解的7件事

1. 1Bright shade, no direct sun

   Direct sunlight easily scorches the leaves, so keep the plant in bright, indirect light, such as behind a sheer curtain. Good air circulation also helps prevent the plant from staying damp and suffering rot.

2. 2Water before it fully dries

   As a terrestrial orchid, water thoroughly until it runs from the bottom of the pot once the surface of the mix starts to dry, rather than letting it dry out completely. At the same time, avoid leaving standing water in the saucer, since constantly soggy mix can lead to root rot.

3. 3Use a well-drained mix

   A mix based on sphagnum moss and bark, chosen for good drainage and airflow, works best. Dense or overly water-retentive media raise the risk of root rot.

4. 4Repot every 1-2 years

   Repot roughly every one to two years, since the growing medium breaks down over time and can harm the roots. A crowded pot is also a good opportunity to divide the plant, letting you propagate it and enjoy it for years as a perennial.

5. 5Keep warm indoors in winter

   Native to a relatively mild region rather than high mountains, this species has little cold tolerance. Bring it indoors somewhere the temperature won't drop too far in winter, and keep it away from cold drafts.

6. 6Support the flower spike

   Because flowers open one after another from the bottom of the spike, blooming continues for an extended period. Staking the spike helps keep it stable as new flowers continue to open.

7. 7Check Leaves, New Growth, and the Registration Certificate

   When choosing a plant, look for leaves with little damage or discoloration and check whether a new shoot is emerging at the base. As an Appendix I species, it must come with a registration certificate under Japan's Act on Conservation of Endangered Species (種の保存法), so always confirm the certificate when acquiring one.
