Agave utahensis var. eborispina (Ivory-spined agave)

Eborispina is a variety of Agave utahensis native to limestone outcrops in California and Nevada, known in English as the ivory-spined agave; the varietal name likewise means 'ivory spine' in Latin. According to the Flora of North America, the rosettes are small at 15-30 cm, the leaves 15-30 cm long and 1.5-3 cm wide with marginal teeth of 6-12 mm, and the stout ivory-white tip spine reaches 10-20 cm. The flower stalk is 2-4 m and blooms from late winter to spring. It grows in desert scrub at about 1,100-1,900 m. Var. nevadensis, another variety of the species, has a slender tip spine of about 4-8 cm, so spine length and thickness tell them apart. According to a Japanese succulent encyclopedia, spines may be straight or wavy, and strongly waved plants are popular as 'Kagerou'. The utahensis group is very prone to rot in humid heat, so getting through a Japanese summer is the key to growing it. In Japan seedlings and seed are widely stocked by specialist nurseries.
