Nepenthes Bicalcarata
AdvancedNepenthes bicalcarata
A Nepenthes with two fang-like projections at the pitcher mouth, famous for ant symbiosis.
About
Nepenthes bicalcarata is a large lowland species native to the peat swamp forests of Borneo, particularly Sarawak. It is immediately recognizable by two prominent fang-like spurs projecting downward from the underside of the pitcher lid—a feature unique among Nepenthes and the origin of its Latin name. These fangs play a central role in a well-studied mutualistic relationship with Camponotus schmitzi ants, which nest within the plant's hollow tendrils. The ants remove excess prey items from the pitchers and deter insects from robbing the pitcher fluid, while the plant provides shelter and a food source for the ants. Cultivation requires consistently warm temperatures (20–35°C), high humidity, and sphagnum media with good moisture retention. The species grows very large and requires ample space.
