Sarracenia 'Scarlet Belle'
BeginnerSarracenia 'Scarlet Belle'
An American cultivar from S. leucophylla × S. psittacina. Numerous vivid scarlet pitchers up to 40 cm tall turn their mouths toward the centre of the plant, and its vigour and good colour even in part shade have made it widespread.
About
'Scarlet Belle' is a Sarracenia cultivar raised in spring 1985 by Bob Hanrahan in Georgia, USA, and registered with the International Carnivorous Plant Society (ICPS) in 2003. He pollinated crimson S. leucophylla with pollen from a compact, maroon S. psittacina and selected only the single best seedling for tissue culture. This parentage is also known as the natural hybrid S. × wrigleyana, but the cultivar differs from typical plants in its intense scarlet pitchers and vigorous habit, producing a profusion of pitchers. According to the registration, the pitchers are up to 40 cm long, slightly conical, with the mouth turned toward the centre of the plant; on mature pitchers the opening varies from closed to about 5 cm wide and 3 cm high, flared and triangular. Prominent pale windows (areoles) run down from the mouth. It keeps pitchers all year with some winter damage and has growth spurts in spring and late summer. Colour is best in full sun, but it colours well in lower light and tolerates soil from very wet to almost dry. All parts of the flower are deep burgundy, intermediate in size between the parents. Derived from a single plant multiplied by tissue culture, it is one of the Sarracenia hybrids most often seen in Japan at garden centres, aquarium plant shops and online.

Growing Tips
Light & Placement
Colour is best in full sun, but this tough cultivar colours well in part shade too. Grow it outdoors in as bright a spot as possible.
Watering
Keep the pot standing in about 4-6 cm of water at all times and never let it dry out. Use rain water or other water low in dissolved minerals.
Soil & Repotting
A 1:1 peat and sand mix is the standard. Divide and repot well-grown plants every 3 or 4 years.
Temperature & Overwintering
It keeps its pitchers through winter with some damage. The parent S. psittacina is freeze-sensitive, so protect it from hard frost in cold areas.
Fertilizer
Do not fertilize the soil of mature plants; it can cause rhizome rot. Plenty of sun and access to prey are enough.
Pruning & Grooming
The plant recovers nutrients from old leaves, so cut off only the brown, dead parts.
Propagation
Keep the cultivar true by division; seedlings will not be the same cultivar.
