About
Sarracenia flava var. rubricorpora is one of the varieties of the yellow pitcher plant, S. flava, described by Donald Schnell in 1998; the name means 'red body'. It has a red pitcher tube with a veined yellow or green lid, and the lid and the inside of the pitcher stay green. This contrast of red body and pale lid is how to recognise it, and separates it from var. atropurpurea, which is red all over with a lid that is red from the moment it opens. However, red-tubed plants whose lids open green and slowly redden could be this variety or a cross with var. atropurpurea, and complex hybrids that darken in some years are sometimes mistaken for var. ornata or var. rubricorpora. It is a rare variety found only in the Florida panhandle, and usually produces just one large pitcher per rosette each year, so stands in the wild look sparsely pitchered. The GBIF backbone merges it into S. flava, but in horticulture it is widely sold under the variety name. S. flava pitchers are typically about 50 cm tall, sometimes over 1 m. In Japan, seedlings and clone-numbered plants advertised as giant red-tube forms appear at online auctions.
