Sarracenia 'Judith Hindle'
BeginnerSarracenia 'Judith Hindle'
A three-species Sarracenia hybrid raised by Alan Hindle. Pitchers open green laced with yellow in spring and turn deep plum red by late summer, topped by a ruffled hood mottled white, yellow and green.
About
'Judith Hindle' is a Sarracenia cultivar raised by Alan Hindle in 1985 and named after his wife. It was published by Peter D'Amato in 1993 and entered in the International Carnivorous Plant Society (ICPS) register in 1998. It carries three species: a hybrid of S. leucophylla and S. flava var. rugelii crossed again with S. purpurea. The original description says the young trumpets are green laced with yellow, with a green and white ruffled hood; they soon darken to deep plum red, keeping white, yellow and green mottling in the hood, and the paler colouring turns pink as the pitcher ages. The mix of white patches and ruffled lids from S. leucophylla with the red colour and stocky shape from S. purpurea is what identifies it, and Barry Rice ranks it among the finest Sarracenia cultivars for its vigour and well-formed leaves. Its colour changes greatly through the season, from green in spring to dark red in late summer, so plants look different depending on when you buy them. In Japan it is a standard hybrid at garden centres, aquarium plant shops and online, sometimes under the spelling 'ジュディスヒンドル'. Care is the same as for other Sarracenia: full sun, tray watering, no fertilizer and a winter dormancy.

Growing Tips
Light & Placement
Grow outdoors in full sun; with too little light the colour is poor and the pitchers are weak.
Watering
Keep the pot standing in about 4-6 cm of water at all times and never let it dry out. Use rain water or other water low in dissolved minerals.
Soil & Repotting
A 1:1 peat and sand mix is the standard. Divide and repot well-grown plants every 3 or 4 years.
Temperature & Overwintering
Let it go dormant in winter. Fully dormant plants survive a few weeks frozen solid in their pots, but early and late frosts are the danger. Keep the winter spot cool, not warm.
Fertilizer
Do not fertilize the soil of mature plants; it can cause rhizome rot. Plenty of sun and access to prey are enough.
Propagation
Keep the cultivar true by division; seedlings will not be the same cultivar.
