Sarracenia flava var. atropurpurea
IntermediateSarracenia flava var. atropurpurea
A variety of the yellow pitcher plant, S. flava, coloured deep red over the whole tube and lid. The lid is red from the moment it opens and usually darker than the tube. Strong light is essential for the colour.
About
Sarracenia flava var. atropurpurea is one of the varieties of the yellow pitcher plant, S. flava, of the south-eastern United States. The seven varieties of S. flava are distinguished mainly by pitcher colour. This one is deep red inside and out over the whole tube and lid, described as unmistakable, and older publications call it the 'all-red' form. It is most common on the Atlantic coastal plain of North and South Carolina, where it is still rare, and is rarer still in the Florida panhandle. The similar var. rubricorpora has a red tube with a green to yellow lid, whereas in var. atropurpurea the lid is red from the moment it opens and usually darker than the tube. Red-tubed plants whose lids open green and slowly redden could belong to either variety or be crosses between them, so identification can be hard. The intense colour needs a great deal of light, and some clones reportedly lose their colour for the season if transplanted, moved or even turned in their pots. S. flava pitchers are typically about 50 cm tall, sometimes over 1 m, and the yellow spring flowers smell of cat urine. In Japan, clone-numbered plants and seed are sold online and at auctions.

Growing Tips
Light & Placement
The deep red needs a great deal of light. Grow it in full sun outdoors, and once placed, leave it be; some clones lose colour if moved or even turned.
Watering
Keep the pot standing in about 4-6 cm of water at all times and never let it dry out. Use rain water or other water low in dissolved minerals.
Soil & Repotting
A 1:1 peat and sand mix is the standard. Divide and repot well-grown plants every 3 or 4 years.
Temperature & Overwintering
Let it go dormant in winter. Fully dormant plants survive a few weeks frozen solid in their pots, but early and late frosts are the danger. Keep the winter spot cool, not warm.
Fertilizer
Do not fertilize the soil of mature plants; it can cause rhizome rot. Plenty of sun and access to prey are enough.
Pests & Cautions
The varieties of S. flava differ mainly in colour, and intermediate plants and crosses between varieties are common even in the wild. Do not rely on the variety name alone; check the colour of tube and lid on photos or the plant itself.
