Adenium obesum subsp. somalense
IntermediateAdenium obesum subsp. somalense
An Adenium recognised by its broad-based, conical caudex and narrow leaves with white veins. Flowers are smaller than those of A. obesum, under 5 cm across, with narrow pointed petals and red nectar guides.
About
Adenium somalense belongs to the dogbane family (Apocynaceae) and is treated by GBIF as a subspecies of Adenium obesum, the desert rose. It ranges from Somalia south through the Rift Valley into Kenya and Tanzania. In Somalia and north-western Kenya there are tree-like populations up to about 4.5 m tall with a very wide-based, conical caudex, the most reliable identifying feature. Across much of Kenya the plants are shrubbier with smaller caudices, apparently intergrading with A. obesum. Leaves are 5-10 cm long and 18-25 mm wide, bright green and usually white-veined. Flowers are pink to deep red, under 5 cm across, with narrow pointed petals and nectar guides that reach onto the petals. Most cultivated plants are the shrubby intergrade form; they have an obligate winter dormancy and do not re-leaf until spring flowering has peaked. The dwarf var. crispum from the same area forms a turnip-shaped underground caudex and has crisped, narrow leaves. In Japan it is sold as "Somalense" seedlings and rooted plants through online shops and auction sites, and locality seed is also offered.

Growing Tips
Light & Placement
Grow in full sun during the growing season. Seedlings of the tree form grow vigorously, so give plenty of light to prevent leggy stems.
Watering
Water thoroughly once the soil dries while the plant is in leaf. After leaf drop, withhold water and keep it on the dry side until new leaves appear in spring.

It has an obligate winter dormancy and may not re-leaf until spring flowering has peaked. Do not increase watering thinking it has died; wait for buds to move.
Temperature & Overwintering
It is frost-tender; overwinter it dry in a warm, frost-free room.
Soil & Repotting
Use a free-draining mix and repot when warm weather starts growth. Take care not to damage the thick roots.
