About
Boswellia sacra is a deciduous tree of the Burseraceae whose dried resin is frankincense. It grows in Oman, Yemen and Somalia at 5-1,230 m, in arid woodland, on steep slopes and often on calcareous soil. The IUCN Red List category is Near Threatened, with declines reported from browsing and over-tapping of resin. Trees reach 1.5-8 m; the pale brown bark flakes like paper over a reddish-brown resinous layer. Trees on steep rock develop a cushion-like swollen trunk base that grips the rock. Leaves are odd-pinnate with 13-19 leaflets clustered at branch tips, the new leaves finely downy; the small flowers are white. In cultivation it grows slowly, forms a network of fine roots rather than a deep taproot, so it can be kept in shallow pots, and heals quickly from heavy pruning, making it popular for bonsai. In Japan, seedlings are sold as the "frankincense tree" by specialist nurseries and on online auction sites, and seed is also available.
