About

Cyphostemma bainesii grows in dry savannas from northern South Africa through Botswana and Zimbabwe, belonging to the grape family (Vitaceae). Known as Wild Grape, it is one of the most massively swollen caudex plants in the genus—trunk diameters of many tens of centimeters in mature specimens create an awe-inspiring presence. Large, grape-like leaves are produced vigorously during growth before the plant goes deciduous in the dry season. Small flowers are followed by green to yellow fruits that are toxic. Growth is relatively fast. Full sun, high temperatures, and extremely porous soil are required. Generous summer watering and complete winter drought are standard. Somewhat frost-sensitive. The sheer scale of the trunk and ultimate size potential make it the most impressive of the Vitaceae caudex plants for serious collectors.
