Sesamothamnus Lugardii
IntermediateSesamothamnus lugardii
A large sesame-family caudex tree with thick trunk and green bark, popular non-Madagascar species.
About
Sesamothamnus lugardii grows in dry woodland habitats in Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and northern South Africa, belonging to the Pedaliaceae (sesame) family. Its thick trunk is distinctively green-barked and becomes massively swollen with age—one of the few non-Malagasy representatives of sesame-family caudex plants, and all the more interesting for it. Deciduous in dry seasons, it produces pinnate leaves during growth and white flowers. Growth is slow but the plant becomes impressively large over time. Full sun, high temperatures, and extremely porous soil are essential. Generous watering during the growing season and complete winter drought are correct. Somewhat frost-sensitive. The imposing green trunk and potential for large size make it a statement specimen in advanced collections.
