Uncarina Grandidieri
IntermediateUncarina grandidieri
A sesame-family caudex from Madagascar with yellow flowers, broad leaves and unique seeds.
About
Uncarina grandidieri grows in dry forests of western to southwestern Madagascar and belongs to the Pedaliaceae (sesame) family. The trunk becomes substantially swollen with age, and large, somewhat rough-textured leaves provide lush greenery. From spring through summer, it produces striking yellow flowers exceeding 5 cm in diameter in succession, making it one of the more ornamental caudex plants in bloom. Fruits bear hooked spines for zoochorous seed dispersal. Growth is relatively fast and vigorous even in containers. Full sun, well-draining soil, and generous watering during the growing season suit it well; after leaf drop in winter, near-complete drought is appropriate. Sensitive to cold below 10°C. Its combination of showy flowers, distinctive fruits, and swelling trunk makes it a popular and rewarding species.
