Philippine Paphiopedilum
IntermediatePaphiopedilum philippinense
A large slipper orchid from limestone in the Philippines and northern Borneo. It spreads up to nine thick, glossy leaves and carries three to five flowers on a stem up to 60 cm tall, each spanning up to about 22 cm.
About
Paphiopedilum philippinense is a large slipper orchid in section Coryopedilum, described in 1862 as Cypripedium philippinense. It grows in the Philippines and northern Borneo on limestone outcrops from near the shore up to 500 m, as a terrestrial or epiphyte. The leaves are thick, leathery and glossy clear green, up to about nine per plant, spreading in a V-shaped cross-section. It flowers over a long season from late winter to autumn, opening three to five flowers in succession on a purple-brown hairy stem about 60 cm tall; the flowers span up to about 22.5 cm. Section Coryopedilum also includes P. rothschildianum. The plant known as var. roebelenii is sometimes treated as a variety and is listed by GBIF as a synonym of this species. Forms with whitish-yellow flowers (f. album, f. alboflavum) have also been described. It is a warm grower that becomes large, so it needs space. In Japan it is sold by specialist orchid nurseries that carry Paphiopedilum species.
