About
'Francesco Baldi' is a nursery-raised intergeneric hybrid in the Crassulaceae between two Mexican species, Graptopetalum paraguayense and Sedum pachyphyllum. It takes its pinkish tones from the first and its elongated leaf shape from the Sedum. The thick, lance-shaped leaves, up to 6-7 cm long, are pale green with a powdery bloom, turning blue-grey in partial shade, pinkish grey in strong sun and purplish brown in cold winters. Rosettes about 10-12 cm across form at the ends of lengthening, trailing stems, making a low, spreading colony about 15 cm tall; older lower leaves fall, so eventually rosettes sit at the tips of bare stems. The stems are brittle and break easily. In Japan it is widely sold as a filler for mixed plantings, sometimes labelled as Graptopetalum or Sedum. The similarly named 'Daruma Shurei' is treated as a separate cultivar. Its parent S. pachyphyllum also has an entry in this encyclopedia.

Light & Placement
It adapts to part shade or full sun, and good sun keeps it compact and colourful. Keep it out of prolonged rain. The stems are brittle, so choose a spot and avoid moving it often.
Watering
In spring and autumn water thoroughly once the soil has dried, and water less in summer to avoid stuffiness. From October to March give just enough to keep the leaves from shrivelling; in very humid winters it can rot even when dry.
