Haworthia Obtusa
IntermediateHaworthia cooperi var. truncata
A popular Haworthia variety with spherical translucent ‘windows’ that beautifully transmit light. Known as ‘dewdrop’ in Japan, it has a uniquely mystical beauty.
About
Haworthia cooperi var. truncata (Haworthia Obtusa) is a highly popular variety of H. cooperi, native to the Cape Province of South Africa. In Japan it is affectionately called 'Dewdrop' (Shizukuishi) for the gem-like quality of its translucent leaf tips. The leaves are plump and broadly rounded, with the apical window particularly well-developed and highly translucent, giving the plant its characteristic jewel-like glow when backlit. In nature, most of the leaf body is buried in soil, with only the window exposed—an adaptation replicated in cultivation by providing bright filtered light. Compact rosettes reach 3–8 cm across. Direct sun degrades the window transparency and may cause scorch; bright indirect light is ideal. The species is shade-tolerant and amenable to indoor growing. Cold hardiness is to approximately 5°C. Propagation is by offsets, leaf cuttings, or seed. Select forms with especially large or highly transparent windows are actively sought by collectors and can command premium prices.
