The rainbow cactus (Echinocereus rigidissimus) is a small cactus of the arid southwestern United States (e.g. Arizona) and northern Mexico. On a short cylindrical body, dense comb-like (pectinate) spines lie flat, and bands of pink, white, and reddish-brown spines stack horizontally to create a rainbow effect — hence the names rainbow cactus and rainbow hedgehog. The spine color shifts in bands as the plant grows. In early summer it bears large, vivid magenta flowers at the top, making it a highly ornamental and popular collector's plant. It wants full sun — too little light dulls the spine color — and dislikes excess moisture, so water modestly even in the growing season and use very fast-draining soil. Keep it dry and dormant in winter; it is fairly cold-tolerant when dry. Growth is slow. Note that while the genus Echinocereus is CITES Appendix II as part of the whole family, a few other species (e.g. E. schmollii) are listed on Appendix I; this species, E. rigidissimus, is Appendix II.
