About
Echeveria shaviana is native to the mountains of Tamaulipas and Nuevo León in north-eastern Mexico, where it grows in partly shaded spots such as rocky outcrops among fallen pine needles. The rosettes are small, 8–10 cm across, with 50 or more crowded leaves. The leaves are obovate to spatulate, 3–5 cm long and 1.5–2.5 cm wide, thin for an echeveria, and glaucous green flushed pink. Its hallmark is the margin: finely crenulate to wavy and frilled, with small teeth near the tip. In summer it produces pink flowers, yellow inside, nodding along one side of upright stalks. It holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit. Hybrids of shaviana and plants sold as 'Pink Frill' appear in trade alongside locality-labelled plants. Japanese references class it as a spring–autumn grower. Although it comes from partly shaded sites in relatively cool mountains, more light brings out better colour and form. Propagation is mainly from seed, as leaves root with difficulty. In Japan it is sold mainly through specialist nurseries.
